Why we picked it
The Nessie Family is the Supporting cast that proves my kitchen drawer is a desolate wasteland of grey plastic and boredom that desperately needs a sense of humour. It is for the person who thinks that serving soup should involve a mythical beast peeking out from the broth, because adulthood is difficult enough as it is.
The set includes a Mama Nessie (colander), a Mamma Nessie (ladle), and a tiny Baby Nessie for your tea, which is almost too cute for a cynical person like me to handle. I've spent the afternoon making a minestrone just so I could see the purple colander "swimming" through the vegetables.
It's the perfect "I don't know what to buy you" gift for someone who likes cooking but doesn't take themselves as seriously as a Le Creuset owner. It adds a bit of whimsical chaos to the dinner table, which is helpful when your cooking isn't quite up to Michelin standards.
The Irresistible
- The standing design is a stroke of genius; the little feet mean the ladle stays upright on the counter, preventing that unsightly puddle of tomato sauce that usually follows a serving session.
- They are made of toughened nylon that is surprisingly heat-resistant, so Mama Nessie won't melt into a puddle of purple goo the moment she touches the pan.
The Clever Part
- Having a nested set means they take up very little room in the cupboard, which is vital for those of us living in kitchens smaller than a walk-in wardrobe.
- The tea infuser is actually quite functional, providing enough space for loose-leaf tea to expand without leaking leaves all over your mug.
The Fine Print
- While they are "sturdy," they aren't as rigid as a professional metal ladle, so if you're trying to serve a particularly thick, heavy porridge, they can feel a bit "bendy."
- They are definitely not meant for the dishwasher if you want to keep the "beast" looking its best over the long term.
The Reality Check
- There is a non-zero chance that a small child will steal your tea infuser to play "dinosaurs" in the garden, leaving you with a caffeine headache and a very muddy Nessie.
