Why we picked it
The Nostalgia Hot Dog Toaster is our Wildcard today because it is a solution to a problem that literally nobody has ever had: the "difficulty" of boiling a sausage. It is a gloriously unnecessary, retro-red appliance that exists purely for people who think that a pan of water is just too much effort for a mid-afternoon snack.
It is the Wildcard because it is fundamentally absurd-a dedicated piece of counter real estate for the sole purpose of toasting processed meat and bread. I've used it to produce two hot dogs in three minutes, and I felt both a sense of technological triumph and profound personal shame.
It looks like it belongs in a 1950s American diner, which clashes spectacularly with my sensible British kettle and toaster. It is the ultimate "guilty pleasure" gadget for the person who wants a hot dog but wants it with the same level of automated indifference as a slice of burnt Hovis.
The Irresistible
- It actually toasts the buns at the same time as the dogs, ensuring your bread is warm and slightly crispy rather than being a cold, sad sleeve for your sausage.
- The removable hot dog basket and drip tray make the cleanup surprisingly easy, which is the only thing standing between me and a daily hot dog habit.
The Clever Part
- It has an adjustable browning timer, allowing you to decide exactly how "charred" you want your frankfurter to be before it pops up like a meat-filled jack-in-the-box.
- It comes with a pair of mini-tongs, which is a lovely touch for those of us who don't want to risk third-degree burns while retrieving a bratwurst.
The Fine Print
- It only fits standard-sized hot dogs; if you're trying to be posh with a thick Cumberland or a jumbo frank, you're going to end up with a jammed mechanism and a lot of frustration.
- The bun slots are notoriously narrow, so if you've bought those fancy, "extra-thick" artisanal brioche rolls, you'll be squashing them in with a mallet.
