At a glance

One-line verdict

A dual-probe smart meat thermometer for keeping two ambitious bits of dinner in line, provided you accept a dock, charging and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi requirement.

Best for

Keen home cooks running two separate cooks at once, particularly across an oven, grill or smoker.

Skip it if

Skip it if one probe is ample for your cooking or your Wi-Fi setup is not 2.4GHz-compatible; dinner need not become an IT department.

The full picture

The MEATER Pro Duo exists for the moment a single thermometer starts to look faintly amateurish: a roast in the oven, something smoky outside, and one person insisting the chicken needs “just a few more minutes”. At that point, dinner has become a small logistics operation, and two numbered probes are less ridiculous than they first sound.

This is the more committed branch of smart meat thermometry. MEATER supplies two food-grade stainless-steel and heat-resistant ceramic probes, plus a bamboo charging dock that also extends range over Wi-Fi. The dock is a fairly civilised answer to having electronics scattered around the kitchen, although it does mean the humble thermometer now has a charging routine.

Its remit is admirably broad. Roasting, smoking, grilling, baking, sous vide, deep frying and direct heat are all supported, so this is aimed at the cook who owns more than one way to apply heat to protein. The probes are waterproof and dishwasher safe too, which is welcome because nobody needs a delicate gadget added to the post-roast washing-up tribunal.

Our view is that the Pro Duo earns its strange little place when two dishes genuinely need attention at the same time. For occasional Sunday roast duty, it is a lot of system. For the person coordinating a smoker, oven and a timetable they made in a notes app, it is exactly the sort of unnecessary competence we rather enjoy.

The Irresistible

  • Two numbered probes let you monitor two separate cooks at once, rather than pretending the second dish will somehow look after itself.
  • The charging dock combines storage, charging and built-in Wi-Fi range extension, which is unusually thoughtful for a thermometer setup.
  • MEATER specifies a wide cooking remit: grilling, smoking, roasting, deep frying, direct heat, sous vide and baking.
  • The probes are waterproof and dishwasher safe, sparing them from the usual gadget-versus-greasy-kitchen standoff.

The Clever Part

  • Each probe is 130mm long and 5mm in diameter, while weighing 14.6g, so the hardware itself is notably compact.
  • A full probe charge is specified for 24–48 hours of battery life, after at least 15 minutes of charging and roughly 30 minutes for a full charge.
  • The rechargeable dock uses USB-C and is specified for about 24 hours of continuous Wi-Fi-mode use or 70–80 days idle time.
  • Bluetooth 5.2 Coded PHY Long Range and the dock’s Wi-Fi repeater provide a more flexible connectivity arrangement than a basic short-range kitchen gadget.

The Fine Print

  • The Wi-Fi repeater connects only to 2.4GHz networks, a very modern caveat for an activity that otherwise involves staring at meat.
  • The dock takes approximately two hours to fully charge, so it is one more device best not discovered flat just as guests are arriving.
  • Only the probes are waterproof and dishwasher safe; the electronic bamboo dock must stay out of the sink.

The Reality Check

  • This is fundamentally a two-cook system: anyone regularly cooking one uncomplicated thing at a time may find the second probe, dock and connectivity setup more ceremony than dinner requires.
