Fresh basil is one of life’s small luxuries until it arrives home in a flimsy plastic pot, spends two days on a dim windowsill and quietly becomes an object lesson in optimism. We chose the Click & Grow Smart Garden 3 for people who would like herbs in the kitchen but would rather not turn their evening pasta into a referendum on their ability to keep a plant alive.

This is a compact indoor herb garden: 300 mm wide, 120 mm deep and fitted with an LED grow light. Three Basil Plant Pods are included, so the initial setup has a blessedly low threshold for faff. The Smart Garden 3 also uses 8 W of power and has a 1900 mm cable, making it plausible for a kitchen counter rather than a dedicated shrine to domestic self-improvement.

The appeal is not that a gadget can make anyone a gardening sage. It is that the product gives a very particular kitchen ambition—having basil available when dinner needs rescuing—a designated home. We think that is why it stands out: it takes a useful but slightly aspirational idea and packages it in a form that does not demand a conservatory, a shed or a sudden interest in soil.

There is still a reality check. Although its base is compact, the stated height reaches 470 mm, so it needs actual room above it. In a tiny flat, the battle for counter territory is already savage; the kettle has seniority, and the air fryer is not known for compromise.
